Do shaved carrot peelings count as a condiment?

April 7, 2008

My answer, of course, is absolutely not. Stephen Russell’s answer is, of course, hells yes! During the last few lunches, I have carefully observed Stephen’s behavior during the sandwich preparation process, in order to better understand why this young lad might confuse carrots for condiments.

Around 12:05 (Stephen always works late into the lunchtime hour), young Russell pokes his head up above his cubicle wall, reminiscent of a noontime game of Whack-A-Mole, when he detects the fragrant aroma of Lean Cuisines and Jordan’s chicken patties wafting from the kitchen microwave.

My lord springs to his feet, snagging his cuisine compilations from the stinky fridge to quell his grumbling stomache. The usual sandwich suspects include: sub roll, ham, a tomato, cheese and the item in question: peeled baby carrots.

Now all of these items would be delectable sandwich compliments, were it not for one glaring fact: Stephen uses a knife to shave said peeled baby carrots to line the inside of his sub roll. These are not carrot strings, my friends… nor are they thin orange slivers of carrots, carefully shaved from the vegetable with a peeler. These carrots are merely a shade of their former selves, tricked into believing they will serve a greater purpose… maybe reach a new level of sandwich-dom. But no, these carrots will never serve the purpose of a true condiment: protect the creator from choking – the ultimate dry sandwich debacle.

Let me know your thoughts. Do you trust carrots to keep you safe, as one trusts ketchup or mayo?

Of course carrots don’t count as a condiment. This is Stephen’s way of admitting that dry sandwiches stink and need something, anything to “spice” them up.

On a personal note, I’d like to point out that Stephen has, in fact, started using a carrot peeler. Although, it is the very same carrot peeler we used last week to try to dislodge a dime from his seat belt buckle, but that’s another story entirely.

A condiment is a prepared edible substance or mixture, often preserved or fermented, that is added in variable quantities, most often at the table, to make food more suitable to the diner’s taste.[1]

Although Steven ups his credibility with shavings from fresh carrots, I can’t say they fall into the ‘condiment’ family. Condiments are, by definition: a prepared food.

Steven, I highly recommend cucumber slices, they add some moisture without the slime.

Eat on my friend. Eat on.

Acually, if you put a carrot and a pickle on a hot dog, you get one of the tastiest treats around. It sounds weird, but trust me, it’s hot dogtastic! But other than on a hot dog (with a pickle) carrots should remain next to main dishes or on salads…period.

What’s next? Counting potato skins? To even think carrot peelings count as a condiment makes a travesty of the entire question. Give me mayo, ketchup or mustard or give me death!

Oh Russell, I can forgive you for the Rustup debacle, but an illegal substitution on the sandwich? Why, that’s blasphemy! You’ve got an entire cafeteria complete with FREE deli condiments a mere 200 yards from where you sit… this is just unacceptable my friend.

Couple of things… The shavings add a sweet, yet crunchy flavor/texture to any sandwich. Also, the amount of carrot shavings on this beast of a sandwich is basically like having a salad underneath the meat of choice. Carrot is the perfect compliment to your classic (and unopposed) toppings of lettuce, tomato and pickle.

Is it a condiment? Maybe not in the traditional sense, but can’t we think outside of the box on this? Don’t we want to think outside of the box?

On a related note, I will be making said sandwich tomorrow. I encourage you all to watch the show unfold…
